How to Care for Your Leather Strap Watches

Watches and timepieces fetch a high price especially if you purchase them with leather straps which could also be an inordinate purchase by itself. Once you have splurged money on your watches and leather straps, the next thing you need to do is to know how to care for it to make sure that your leather straps stand the test of time. Regular caring for the strap is a necessity and you have to follow through. Fortunately, the process is easy and you’d eventually get used to doing it on a regular basis.

Step one: Remove the strap

Before you start cleaning the strap, it is better that you remove it from the watch to make sure that the watch itself will not be wet or nicked when you are trying to clean the straps. Cleaning the watch should be done separately.

Step two: Wipe the strap thoroughly

Since the watch straps rests in our wrists, the potential for it to be dirty and to trap all dirt and grime is very likely. Wiping the strap thoroughly before washing it would ensure that the dirt and dust in the strap would not become caked or turn into mud.

Wiping imperceptible debris and fragments before you start scrubbing the strap would keep the leather from being scratched. This is especially true if you have a sensitive calf leather watch strap. Wiping the strap does not require any special tool or gadget, a soft, dry and clean cloth is enough to do the job.

Step three: Scrub the strap

After wiping the strap, you should use a warm, soapy water to scrub the remaining dirt. Using a wet cloth, gently scrub both sides of the strap, the side that is touching the skin and the side that is exposed. When scrubbing you have to be gently but still thorough, especially around the edges to make sure the dirt build up is removed. After scrubbing, make sure that the strap is rinsed completely to avoid any residue amassing. Clean any traces of soap and pat it dry with a clean cloth. Try to air dry the strap as much as possible as well to avoid any malodour of a leather that is not dried completely.

Step four: Apply leather conditioner

Once your leather strap is clean and dry, you should apply leather conditioner to moisturize it and as another layer or film of protection. Your strap might look and feel wilted especially after washing which obviously would need to be moisturized to keep it soft and hydrated. A leather strap that is regularly being applied with conditioner and moisturizer would feel soft to the touch and long lasting and to keep the strap from being brittle and breakable.

The watch’s strap changes the whole look and feel of the whole timepiece and usually people gravitate towards buying leather straps. Now that you know how to properly care for these straps, you’d be able to use the straps for a long time, even if the straps are not that upscale.
